I think the potential result of this will be less quantity and more quality, which we believe is good for consumers. Ultimately, time will tell what the effects of this move are and whether it actually means more revenue for those with legitimate music. Change2: Artificial streaming charges
Starting early next year, Spotify has announced it will charge labels and distributors per track when blatant artificial streaming is detected in their content.
This new deterrent follows the enhancement of our artificial streaming detection technology we launched earlier this year, as well as the creation of the newly formed Music Fights Fraud Alliance .
Spotify has stated that this is the reason for the change:
“Spotify can fight artificial streaming once it occurs on our platform, but the industry would benefit from disincentivizing bad actors from uploading music to Spotify and other streaming services in the first place. Spotify believes this will significantly deter labels and distributors from continuing to distribute the music of known bad actors who attempt to siphon money from honest, hard-working artists. These fees will support ongoing efforts to keep the industry and platform free from artificial activity.”
