Facebook polarization & disinformation –

Post by Shishirgano9 »

Trump, Twitter & Social Media – Twitter Adds “Fact-Check” Label to Two Trump Tweets About Mail-In Voting . Furious, the US President threatens to “shut down” social media and signs an executive order on Thursday aimed at limiting their liability protections (Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act) . Trump’s action against fact-checking could have the opposite effect : worsening the problem of online misinformation and harming it . Twitter flags another tweet from the President for “glorifying violence” but does not remove it .

Facebook reportedly downplayed internal initiatives to weaken architect database extremist content . Mark Zuckerberg believes that private companies should not be the “arbiter of truth” . The pandemic is the ultimate test for the platform when it comes to disinformation . While Facebook is successful in downplaying false information about Covid-19, it is not the case for other topics such as vaccines or global warming .

Tracing apps – The StopCovid application has been validated by the CNIL , the Assembly and the Senate . The government hopes for a deployment as early as Monday . But many elected officials and observers believe that the application will be little used – the Bluetooth technology risks being unreliable, owners of an Apple device risk experiencing bugs, and there are fears that it will encroach on privacy . Other countries are deploying their own technologies – sometimes inappropriately – like China, which wants to perpetuate its tracing apps to rate residents according to their lifestyle .
