Scrum is a project management methodology created at the end of the last century. Its main principles are: a team of motivated, effective specialists, each of whom is assigned a specific function; well-established internal communication; a clear formulation of specific tasks; their distribution by importance for the customer; implementation of each of them in a short period of time - a sprint (1-4 weeks).
What does the Product Owner do in this system? He is responsible for the activities of the project team(s), the product's compliance with the goals and wishes of the customer. His task is to quickly respond to all changes and coordinate the work in order to achieve maximum efficiency of the final product. He is the link between all specialists, marketers, customers and managers. Analyzing all available data, he leads the process to the optimal result. He has the final say in prioritizing tasks in each sprint. To do this, this specialist takes into account several factors: business interests, conversion rates and level of work with customers, technical parameters, SEO and infrastructure.
Who is Product Owner?
When setting short-term tasks, the Product Owner consults with senior managers. His goal is to ensure that sprints coincide with quarterly plans, taking into account OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) and KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).
If we are talking about not very large projects, where there is no Scrum Master position, the product owner also takes on the organization of standups and daily syncs. These are short meetings at the beginning of the working day (15-20 minutes), the purpose of which is to verify intermediate results and outline immediate goals. Such meetings help motivate the team, diagnose problems and eliminate them.
The Product Owner's responsibilities include the placement and initial assessment (grooming) of all tasks of a specific sprint. One of the most responsible functions of the Product Owner, which has already been mentioned, is the coordination of the work of several project teams.
This is especially true when using the Agile methodology, when all groups operate according to the principles of SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework – a set of standards for working according to this methodology) and at the same time depend on each other. For example, changes are made by one team, and the code for these actions is written by another. As a rule, information collection and communication between different groups are carried out before quarterly planning.
