What is FXO and FXS?
If you've researched digital telephony, you've probably come across these terms. Before explaining what they are, we need to talk about gateways. In short, the function of gateways (or gates in literal translation) is to connect two different networks . Following different network protocols, gateways are responsible for making different types of connections, such as:
Network gateway

Another example of a gateway is the Firewall. Its function is to receive , identify and filter all data received via the network, preventing potential dangers to the device.
Digital Telephony Gateways
Now that we've explained what gateways are, we can move on to talk about FXO and FXS , which are key players in the transition from analog data (conventional telephony) to digital data (cloud telephony).
"FXS
One of the most widely used gateways in telephone exchanges, FXS is what converts analog calls into VOIP calls . When a customer contacts your company via a conventional telephone, the FXS receives the analog data, converting it into digital data, to be decoded by your digital telephone exchange.
FXO
FXO, on the other hand, does the opposite. It converts digital data into analog data. This way, you can contact your digital telephone exchange using conventional devices. Even if the call is made between an IP PBX and an analog telephone, all the features of cloud telephony, such as call recording and call forwarding, are still available.
