The qualitative approach is also attentive to the history and specific culture of the media concerned and sheds light on the way in which initiatives are integrated into organisational structures, work processes and professional practices.
These case studies will explore a key gambling data morocco question of the LINC project: are we witnessing the birth of “engagement” journalism? Engagement is understood as distinct from engagement as suggested by click-through metrics on social media, and broader than activist or political engagement: an engagement with audiences or a community, implying a reciprocal relationship between media and audiences.
A possible answer is already emerging in the census. We can indeed observe that, for a good number of the dated initiatives, they seem to have emerged in four successive waves (and not exclusive): first those that evoke the principles of participatory journalism (2010-2015), then the arrival of crowdfunding initiatives (from 2014), and finally a focus on actions relating to dialogue and transparency (from 2017), and the integration of audiences into the editorial process (few in number and essentially recent, from 2018). These last two waves could be part of the emergence, in French-speaking Europe, of an engaged journalism, a dynamic already at work for several years in the Anglo-Saxon field (see in particular the actions of the Engaged Journalism Accelerator and the work of Batsell ).
